HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said it signed a contract to build four container ships worth a total of 678.9 billion won for a shipping company in Oceania.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service’s electronic disclosure system on the 23rd, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction disclosed that on the 22nd it won an order for four 10,100-TEU class container ships (1 TEU is one 20-foot container) from a shipping company in Oceania for 678,967.55 million won.
This amounts to 33.9% of last year’s sales, and the ships ordered this time are scheduled to be delivered to the shipowner in Apr. 2029.
With this order, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has secured a total of eight 10,000-TEU class container ships to build this year. HJ Shipbuilding & Construction first won an order for a 10,000-TEU class container ship in Feb., followed by two additional ships in Apr.
The vessels are a model HJ Shipbuilding & Construction developed in-house to match the specifications of the dock at the Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan. HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said it focused on reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by applying high-efficiency propulsion and hull-form design technologies to the vessels. It also increased capacity for reefer containers used to transport refrigerated and frozen cargo to meet demand for high value-added cargo transport.
In particular, they are equipped with a desulfurization system, an SOx scrubber, and apply a “methanol-ready” design to respond to tighter regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Yu Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, said, “As a result of building up experience and technological strength in the medium- to large-size container ship market, we have laid the groundwork to build 10,000-TEU class container ships in succession at the Yeongdo Shipyard,” and added, “We will continue to pursue a selective order-taking strategy centered on profitability while steadily strengthening our competitiveness in high-efficiency, eco-friendly, high value-added container ships.”
