BENGALURU: A 45-year-old homemaker allegedly smothered her 13-year-old daughter before dying by suicide at their residence in Immadihalli, Whitefield, on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Suvarna Chandrashekhar and her daughter Tarunya Chandrashekhar, a Class VII student.

The incident came to light after Suvarna’s husband, Chandrashekhar, was unable to reach her by phone and asked his younger brother to check on the family. When he arrived around 11am and received no response, he looked through a bedroom window and found Suvarna hanging from a ceiling fan, while Tarunya was lying unresponsive on the bed. Police were immediately alerted.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Suvarna smothered her daughter with a pillow before taking her own life. Police said no suicide note or message has been recovered so far.

According to Chandrashekhar, Suvarna had been battling depression, which may have contributed to the incident. A senior officer said she often expressed anxiety about who would care for her daughter in her absence and was also worried about her husband’s heart condition.

Chandrashekhar works as a computer operator at a private hospital near ITPL.

Investigators said the family had spent the previous evening together — watching a cricket match at home before going out for dinner. After returning, Suvarna reportedly told her husband she was tired and would not prepare breakfast the next morning. Chandrashekhar slept in a separate room and left for work after having breakfast outside.

Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
