NEW DELHI: What began as a romantic getaway ended in bloodshed, as Indore resident Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered during his honeymoon in Meghalaya—allegedly at the behest of his own wife. Meghalaya Director General of Police I Nongrang confirmed on Monday that Raja’s wife, Sonam, had hired contract killers to carry out the murder.

Sonam surrendered to police at Nandganj police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and was subsequently taken into custody. Three other accused were arrested in coordinated overnight operations, including one from UP and two from Indore, the DGP said.

“All three apprehended men confessed during interrogation that they were hired by the victim’s wife,” Nongrang stated, adding that the investigation is ongoing, with more suspects being pursued in Madhya Pradesh.

The murder has sent shockwaves across the country, adding to India’s growing list of crimes rooted in broken relationships and betrayal.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma praised the police for swift action in unraveling the case. “Within seven days, a major breakthrough has been achieved. Three assailants from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, the woman has surrendered, and the operation continues to catch one more suspect. Well done,” he posted on X.
