Weathernews Inc. and HD Hyundai Marine Solution Co., Ltd. have signed a three-year contract with H-Line Shipping, a major South Korean shipping company, to deploy their jointly developed route optimization solution, OSR-OW, across eight large bulk carriers. The agreement, finalized on October 1, 2026, marks the first commercial contract secured since the two companies signed their Framework Agreement in July.
From Framework to Fleet
When Weathernews and HD Hyundai Marine Solution signed their Framework Agreement in July, the companies outlined a plan to pursue initial commercial contracts with Korean shipping operators as a first step toward wider global deployment. The agreement with H-Line Shipping delivers on that plan—arriving just two months later.
OSR-OW, short for Optimum Ship Routeing × OceanWise, combines Weathernews’ weather forecasting technology with HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s AI-based vessel performance modeling to recommend more fuel-efficient routes. For a closer look at how the technology works, see our earlier conversation with Weathernews’ Sanghyub Park, who leads the company’s maritime operations in Korea.
Proven Before Deployment
Before finalizing the agreement, the two companies ran a demonstration project with H-Line Shipping to confirm OSR-OW’s performance under real operating conditions. The results showed fuel savings of at least 3%—consistent with earlier trial data, where testing across eight vessels from a single fleet averaged a 5.3% fuel reduction over the course of 2024.
Lowering the Barrier to Adoption
As with earlier deployments, the H-Line Shipping rollout required no hardware changes or additional onboard equipment. OSR-OW integrates directly into operators’ existing systems through software, allowing shipping companies to adopt the solution without added capital expenditure—a detail that has helped drive interest since the solution was first introduced.
Why Now
The agreement comes as shipping companies face mounting pressure on multiple fronts. The IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator requirements continue to tighten, the EU’s Emissions Trading System is expanding in phases, and fuel prices remain elevated. Together, these pressures are pushing operators toward efficiency gains that don’t require costly retrofits or new infrastructure—a shift that’s increasingly shaping fleet decisions industry-wide.
What’s Next
With the H-Line Shipping contract as an early proof point, Weathernews and HD Hyundai Marine Solution plan to continue expanding OSR-OW toward the roughly 8,000 vessels identified in July as the solution’s addressable market. The companies will pursue phased marketing efforts and activate their joint sales network to broaden adoption globally.
HD Hyundai Marine Solution said, “This agreement shows that shipping companies see real value in combining our AI-based performance modeling with Weathernews’ weather data. We’ll build on this work with H-Line Shipping as we expand OSR-OW to more operators around the world.”
