MUMBAI: A 42-year-old man has been arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) from Surat for allegedly pushing his wife in front of a moving local train at Mulund station, killing her. The couple’s 13-year-old son witnessed the incident, police said.
The accused, Raju Gupta, an electrician, allegedly committed the crime on Saturday after ongoing marital disputes with his wife, Pushpa (36).
Police said Pushpa had earlier filed a non-cognisable complaint against him on February 13 and had moved to her hometown in Uttar Pradesh with the couple’s elder son (15). She had no intention of returning to Mumbai and planned for her elder son to appear for his Class 10 exams from there.
However, her brother, Kamlesh Kumar—an Army jawan—recently brought her back to Mumbai in an attempt to reconcile the couple. After another argument, Pushpa again decided to leave and filed a second complaint.
According to GRP officials, the trio reached Mulund station to travel to Kalwa and visit a relative. At the station, Kamlesh realised his ATM cards, PAN card and Army ID were missing. When he called Raju, the latter confirmed he had them. Kamlesh then asked Pushpa to wait at the station while he and his nephew returned home to retrieve the documents.
At home, a confrontation broke out between Kamlesh and Raju. Police said Raju, along with his younger son, locked Kamlesh and the elder son inside the house before leaving. Neighbours later helped free them, after which Kamlesh alerted the police.
Meanwhile, Raju and his younger son went to Mulund station, where he tried to persuade Pushpa to stay. When she refused and said she wanted a divorce, he allegedly pushed her in front of a Kalyan-bound local train.
After the incident, Raju fled with his younger son, travelling via Vangaon before heading to Surat, where he was later tracked down and arrested by the GRP.
Police have registered a case of murder and are continuing further investigation.
