Thane: Continuous heavy rain pushed the Ulhas River above its danger level on Wednesday, raising fears of flooding across Thane district. At 9 a.m., the water level touched 17.60 metres, breaching the danger mark of 17.50 metres.
Badlapur Kulgaon Municipal Council president Maruti Gaikwad said water has entered some low-lying areas near the banks, though no houses have been submerged. As a precaution, around 140 residents from Sonivali were shifted to BSUP housing facilities.
Authorities have deployed teams across vulnerable locations to monitor the situation. Since the Ulhas originates in Lonavala and flows through Karjat, Badlapur, and Kalyan, officials warned that persistent rainfall could trigger flood-like conditions downstream.
The rising river has already disrupted road connectivity. The Rayta Bridge on National Highway 61, which passes over the Ulhas, was submerged Tuesday evening, forcing traffic diversions via Titwala. However, by Wednesday morning, rising waters flooded Titwala routes toward Govili and Rayta, cutting off movement. At Shahad Phata near Kalyan, waterlogging has brought traffic to a standstill, leaving several areas isolated.
Officials urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert as more rainfall is expected.
