Two young boys drowned while their seven-year-old sister survived after their mother allegedly jumped into a pond with all three children tied to her saree in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district on Sunday. The woman was rescued by locals and remains in critical condition. Police suspect a family dispute may have led to the incident.
According to police, the 26-year-old woman left her home in Karcha village under the Saraimir police station limits on Sunday afternoon, telling her family she was taking her children to buy medicine. Instead, she allegedly went to a pond near the Saraimir market.
Police said she tied her three children her seven-year-old daughter and two sons, aged three years and 18 months to her saree before entering the pond.
The daughter managed to free herself and reach safety, but her younger brothers drowned before help could arrive. Local residents rescued the woman and alerted the police, who rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The girl later walked nearly three kilometres back home and informed family members about the incident, following which the police were notified.
The bodies of the two children have been sent for post-mortem examination. Police said preliminary investigations suggest the woman may have been under mental distress due to an ongoing family dispute. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
