KALYAN: Two inmates sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out in the kitchen of Aadharwadi District Jail in Kalyan on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 1.15 pm while Asif Saindu (30) and Afzal Kazi (37) were preparing rotis for fellow inmates in the prison kitchen.
According to preliminary findings, the fire was caused by a gas leak. Officials said the blaze erupted after part of one inmate’s clothing caught fire near the gas cylinder regulator, causing the flames to spread quickly and engulf both men.
The injured inmates suffered burns to their hands and legs. They were initially taken to the Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar before being referred to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for specialised treatment. Officials said both are undergoing treatment and their condition is being closely monitored.
Prison personnel used fire extinguishers and other available equipment to bring the blaze under control before it could spread to other parts of the kitchen, preventing a larger incident inside the jail.
Police said no other inmates or prison staff were injured, and there was no damage reported to other sections of the prison.
The Khadakpada Police have registered an accidental fire report and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
