Two women, both aged 80, were found dead under mysterious circumstances inside their residence in Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar on Thursday, prompting a police investigation.
Bodies Found in Advanced State of Decomposition
The deceased were identified as Chandra Kanta, a retired teacher from Punjab, and her sister-in-law Saroj Bala, a former employee of the Delhi Electricity Supply Undertaking. Police said the bodies were partially decomposed, indicating that the women may have died several days before they were discovered.
Foul Smell Alerted Authorities
The case came to light around 10:30 a.m. when a sanitation worker who regularly collected garbage from outside the house noticed a foul smell and informed the police.
According to investigators, all doors and windows of the house were closed when officers arrived at the scene.
Bodies Found Inside a Room
A police team entered the single-storey house and found the two women in the same room—one lying on a bed and the other on the floor. Two cups of tea were found nearby.
No Immediate Signs of Foul Play
Police and forensic experts examined the scene but found no signs of forced entry, theft or ransacking during the preliminary investigation.
The house has four entry points, yet investigators said there was no evidence suggesting an unlawful intrusion.
Victims Lived Alone for Years
The two women had been living alone in the house for several years. Saroj Bala was unmarried, while Chandra Kanta’s husband had passed away years earlier. Both were pensioners.
Police said one of the women was known to have health issues.
Domestic Workers Being Questioned
Investigators are questioning the sanitation worker who reported the incident. She told police that she only collected garbage from outside the house.
Another domestic helper employed for household chores was reportedly on leave at the time.
Neighbours Describe Reclusive Lifestyle
Residents in the area said the women largely kept to themselves and rarely interacted with neighbours.
A driver working nearby said he occasionally saw one of the women standing outside the house but seldom observed visitors or social gatherings at the residence.
Postmortem to Determine Cause of Death
The bodies have been sent to the hospital for postmortem examinations, which police hope will clarify the cause and timing of the deaths.
Investigation Continues
While no evidence of foul play has emerged so far, police said all possible angles are being examined as they await forensic and postmortem reports.
