A student trapped under the debris of a collapsed building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan reportedly sent an 11-second video to a friend seeking help as rescue teams continued operations at the site.
The student, identified as Aditya Kumar, is seen lying beneath the rubble with dust and debris covering his face. Blood is also visible on his face, but he appears conscious and uses the camera to show the debris surrounding him.
The video was later shared by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), whose workers were present at the site assisting with rescue efforts.
Officials said around 30 to 50 students were believed to be trapped under the rubble of the five-storey paying-guest building, which collapsed at around 1:30 pm on Sunday. One person was reported dead, while two others were in critical condition at the AIIMS trauma centre.
Trapped Students Make Calls for Help
BJP MLA Anil Sharma, who visited the site, said several people trapped under the debris were still able to make phone calls.
“We are even getting calls from those who are trapped inside,” he said, adding that rescue teams were maintaining contact with those inside and hoping they would be brought out safely.
The collapse triggered panic in the densely populated Satya Niketan area, which is home to several student hostels, eateries and shops near Delhi University’s South Campus. Nearby residents reportedly rushed out of their homes after hearing what they described as a sudden tremor.
Rescue Operation Underway
A large-scale rescue operation is being conducted by teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Civil Defence and other agencies.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site along with Labour Minister Kapil Mishra, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj and other officials to monitor the rescue operation.
Delhi Civil Defence deputy chief warden Sumer Kumar said the narrow and congested lane was making rescue work challenging, but teams were working continuously to locate and evacuate those trapped under the rubble.
The rescue operation remains underway as authorities continue searching the collapsed structure for survivors.
