At least 44 people were injured, including an 18-year-old woman who suffered critical injuries, after a passenger train derailed in northern France on Friday evening, authorities said.
The train, carrying around 180 passengers, was travelling from Rouen to Caen when it went off the tracks near Cléon in Normandy shortly before 8pm local time.
The seriously injured 18-year-old was airlifted to Rouen University Hospital for treatment. Another 43 passengers sustained minor injuries, according to officials.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said around 140 firefighters and emergency personnel were dispatched to the site following the derailment. Passengers who escaped injury were taken to Cléon Town Hall for assistance.
The cause of the derailment was not immediately known, and an investigation is expected to determine what led to the train leaving the tracks.
Rail operator SNCF reported major disruption to services in the region and said replacement buses would be arranged for affected passengers.
