NEW YORK: One person was killed and another critically injured after a woman allegedly stabbed two people in New York City’s Times Square on Monday before being shot dead by police, authorities said.
The stabbings took place around 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, according to the New York Police Department. The suspect, who authorities described as apparently emotionally disturbed, fled north toward an NYPD substation.
Police said the woman was carrying two large knives when officers confronted her near the station. Video recorded by a bystander showed several officers surrounding the suspect. At least one officer appeared to deploy a Taser before the woman moved toward police while allegedly brandishing the knives. Officers then opened fire.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to police sources.
One of the stabbing victims, a woman, also died at a hospital. The second victim sustained life-threatening injuries, police said.
Authorities said the incident does not appear to be terror-related and indicated that the suspect appeared to be emotionally disturbed.
The shooting occurred near an NYPD substation outside One Times Square, one of New York City’s busiest and most heavily policed areas.
Police cordoned off the area and shut part of Seventh Avenue as investigators examined the scene. Authorities urged members of the public to avoid the area while the investigation continued.
