THANE: Three residents were injured early Tuesday after a concrete slab from a fifth-floor apartment gave way and crashed into the flat below in a residential building at Wagle Estate.
The incident took place around 3:07 am at Nutan Neelam Apartment near Hanuman Temple in Shantinagar. Authorities evacuated approximately 85 to 95 occupants from the 25-flat building as a precaution. Residents were temporarily relocated to a nearby municipal school, and both wings of the structure were sealed.
According to Yasin Tadvi, in charge of the regional disaster management cell, the slab of room 501 on the fifth floor of the ground-plus-five-storey building—more than 30 years old—suddenly caved in and fell into the room directly beneath it.
The injured were identified as Gajendra Prasad (60), who suffered a fracture to his right shoulder; Prince Yadav (25), who sustained a fractured right leg; and Pradeep Yadav (23), who sustained injuries to both legs and other parts of his body. All three were taken to a civic hospital for treatment.
Officials said Pradeep Yadav’s condition later turned critical, and he was shifted to a private hospital in Mumbai for advanced medical care.
Teams from the fire brigade, disaster management unit, police and the civic building department reached the site soon after the collapse.
Tadvi said the building had been categorised as C2B (dangerous) and was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Further action will be initiated by the municipal building department following inspection.
