Chennai: The DMK government on Friday introduced a bill aimed at amending the BNS and BNSS Acts to impose harsher penalties for crimes against women in Tamil Nadu.
The proposed legislation seeks to increase the maximum punishment for acid attacks to the death penalty, replacing the current maximum of life imprisonment. Additionally, the punishment for 14 types of crimes against women and girls will be enhanced, with three of these offenses now attracting rigorous imprisonment instead of ordinary imprisonment.
For rape, the minimum sentence will be raised from 10 years to 14 years, with the possibility of a life sentence lasting the entirety of the offender’s natural life.
Chief Minister MK Stalin reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding women and children, stating, “The government is dedicated to the protection, welfare, and well-being of women and children, and they have been accorded the highest priority by the state.”
