FLEET MANAGEMENT LIMITED/ ELEGANT MARINE SERVICES PRIVATE LIMITED

  • What measures are you taking as a reputed shipping company to contribute towards IMO’s theme of this year “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”?

As one of the world’s leading maritime operators, we recognize our responsibility to contribute to safer and sustainable shipping. We fully support environmental requirements laid down under International, Flag State, Port State and Coastal State Laws and follow a zero-tolerance approach to any non-compliance. Further, we maintain a mostly young and fuel-efficient fleet and operate our ships in a way as to minimize fuel consumption. Our Planning and Reporting Infrastructure for Ships (PARIS) software entails the creation of a digital ecosystem, whereby every vessel can connect to services that make voyaging safer and greener. In September 2019, we joined the ‘Getting to Zero Coalition’, launched by Global Maritime Forum, together with the UN Climate Action Summit, to lead the push for shipping’s decarbonization and having commercially viable zero-emission vessels operating along deep-sea trade routes by 2030.

Sea and job’s initiative to raise environmental consciousness is very commendable. Given climate change is one of the major challenges facing our world today, initiatives like this could play a pivotal role in driving awareness and contribute to a greener future.

SYNERGY MARITIME PRIVATE LIMITED

Capt. Rajesh Unni, Founder & CEO

  • What message would you like to give on the occasion of World Maritime Day 2020 “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”?

On World Maritime Day, with thousands of seafarers still stranded at sea, I think now is the time to address shipping’s inability to consistently shape and direct policies that impact our ability to conduct business safely and efficiently. The IMO has devoted this year’s World Maritime Day to sustainability but, again, we have been failing to speak to power beyond the maritime echo chamber. At Synergy Group, we are doing our utmost to relieve seafarers, but the restrictions hampering crew travel are in constant flux. I strongly urge the IMO and others to double down efforts in the fight for seafarer rights before the plight of our crews deteriorates further. “For shipping, as we face these critical challenges of decarbonization and crew changes on World Maritime Day in the midst of this ghastly pandemic, it is quite clear that the status quo is simply unsustainable. “It is also clear that addressing the status quo means we must find a political voice that travels beyond the ports and the high seas. One that reaches the decision makers who are currently determining our collective fates.

Mr. Abdulgani Y. Serang, General Secretary cum Treasurer

NATIONAL UNION OF SEAFARERS OF INDIA

  • What message would you like to give to the seafarers on the occasion of World Maritime Day 2020 “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”?

The words “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable planet” are only idealistic in nature, for the feel good factor and smacks of hypocrisy and double standards which National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) strongly denounces. The way seafarers, crucial to the entire efforts of sustainable shipping, have been and continue to be treated as pariah and treated inhumanely during the COVID 19 pandemic by the world at large needs to be addressed first and only after that lets us speak of sustainability shipping.  The world wants the goods but least concerned about the seafarers who bring them to their doorsteps.  Seafarers designated as “essential” workers have to fight and agitate for “essentials” which they should have received by default. The “pleadings” of the IMO has not altered the course of the world order in favor of the seafarers who continue to be mere statistics. Instead of  “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”, let’s talk about  “Sustaining Seafarers for Sustainable Shipping”.

Mr. Amar Singh Thakur, General Secretary

THE MARITIME UNION OF INDIA

  • What message would you like to give to the seafarers on the occasion of World Maritime Day 2020 “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”?

As a Seafarers’ Union representative, I would like to say that the coming months will be challenging as far as employment is concerned. Issues of decreased worldwide EXIM trade, combined with restrictions on crew changes, which results in additional financial burden on shipping companies will be a major factor. Of Course, staying safe from being affected by the virus, whether on shore or on board taking all safety measures is important. I would like to appeal to our Indian Officers to understand the changed world scenario and adapt to the changes. Companies are putting in all efforts to ensure that seafarers undergo least amount of inconvenience. MUI is doing its best to ensure that the Shipping industry is given its due importance, and always communicates with Government authorities.

  • What message would you like to give to the seafarers on the occasion of World Maritime Day 2020 “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”?

The Seafarers have proved their extreme professionalism and dedication to their work during this Pandemic. While the entire world was shutdown, Seafarers have unflinchingly continued doing their jobs through extended contracts, delivering medical supplies, essentials and commodities throughout the world. However, we cannot take this lightly. There is no doubt that thousands of Seafarers have returned home in past couple of months, yet there are many of them still waiting to get back because worldwide, Governments are not thinking collectively on this huge problem. The situation needs urgent intervention. We need to ensure that Seafarers get the ‘Essential workers’ status and Governments create a green corridor for easy movement of Seafarers worldwide. On the occasion of World Maritime Day, we salute our Seafarers for their huge contribution in these extremely trying times. They are #CovidWarriors for sure. We are extremely indebted to them for their services and we stand with them to demand the Essential Worker status. Also, I take this opportunity to thank the families of seafarers for their support and cooperation as well, without which the Seafarers cannot be their best.
