NEW DELHI: India on Friday successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable, 3,000-km-range Agni-3 ballistic missile from Chandipur off the Odisha coast, reaffirming the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities.
The surface-to-surface missile was launched from a mobile platform as part of a routine training exercise conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence India said the launch validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile system. Officials added that the missile was randomly selected from the production lot for the test, underlining the reliability of India’s strategic arsenal.
Successful Flight and Accuracy
After receiving the launch command, the two-stage, solid-fuel missile lifted off along a pre-designated trajectory and accurately struck its intended target area in the Bay of Bengal.
Defence officials said the successful flight demonstrated the missile’s precision, stability, and readiness for operational deployment.
Key Capabilities
The Agni-3 is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads and can accommodate a payload of up to 1.5 tonnes. It is designed for deployment from road- and rail-based mobile launchers, enhancing survivability and operational flexibility.
The missile was inducted into the SFC in 2011 and serves alongside the Agni-II as a key component of India’s nuclear delivery system.
With its extended range, the Agni-3 enables India to maintain a credible minimum deterrent, covering the entire territory of Pakistan and reaching deep into China.
Part of a Broader Missile Programme
India’s operational missile arsenal includes variants of Agni-I, Agni-II, and Agni-III, as well as Prithvi-II, Dhanush (ship-launched), and Sagarika/K-15 (submarine-launched) systems.
Several advanced missiles, including Prahaar, Prithvi-III, Agni-P, Agni-IV, Agni-V, K-4, and K-5, are currently at various stages of testing and development.
Strengthening Strategic Preparedness
Officials said the latest test reflects India’s continued focus on maintaining a safe, secure, and reliable strategic force. Regular training launches are conducted to ensure the preparedness of personnel and the effectiveness of critical defence systems.
The successful trial further reinforces India’s commitment to sustaining a robust and credible nuclear deterrent in a challenging regional security environment.
