A 75-year-old doctor was allegedly assaulted and robbed by six armed men who barged into his clinic-cum-residence near the City Police Station in Jagraon on Thursday morning.
The incident took place at Chopra Ayurvedic Hospital near Old Raikot Adda Chowk, where the robbers allegedly looted around ₹2 lakh in cash, a gold ring and the doctor’s mobile phone.
According to doctor Vijay Chopra, the robbery appeared to have been carefully planned. One of the accused, reportedly a 24-year-old man, had met him at a milk shop a day earlier and discussed a health problem. He later arrived at the clinic around 7.15 am, posing as a patient.
After the doctor administered a glucose drip to him and went to the house behind the clinic, five other men allegedly entered the premises. The accused reportedly overpowered the doctor, covered his mouth and dragged him into a rear room.
When he resisted, the assailants allegedly assaulted him and threatened him with a revolver. The doctor said he was forced to hand over around ₹1.5 lakh kept in the clinic safe. The robbers allegedly searched his pockets and took another ₹30,000, along with his mobile phone and gold ring.
The suspects then allegedly entered the residential portion of the premises and manhandled the doctor’s wife while searching for more valuables. The situation changed when the doctor’s son arrived and confronted the robbers.
The accused reportedly fled on foot after abandoning their motorcycle at the spot.
Ludhiana Rural police reached the scene and launched an investigation. Police have taken possession of the abandoned motorcycle and are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area, where the suspects were reportedly captured.
DSP Jaswinder Singh said the Ludhiana Rural SSP has formed a special team to identify and arrest the accused. The police are also attempting to trace the owner of the motorcycle left behind by the robbers.
