A representative of the Ukrainian Health Ministry Labs Centre For Water Transport reported the death of a foreign ship captain due to COVID-19 on Sunday, the 9th of August, 2020.

The captain worked for the Liberian-flagged vessel SOPHIA R that was quarantined at the port of Pivdennyi in the Odessa region. Announcing on local radio, the representative announced the death through a local radio station adding that he resided at St. Petersburg in Russia.

SOPHIA R, the cargo ship, arrived on the seaport it is currently docked at, in early July. The quarantined vessel later saw 6 of the crew members showing symptoms of the coronavirus.

Ukrainian epidemiologists tested 10 of the 14 in the crew positive. Of this, the captain had earlier reported on entering that 3 members were already sick.

The ill members were placed under medical supervision while the remained isolated.In a similar case in Pivdenny, another vessel called PATRA, registered in Greece, entered the port of Pivdenny following which 11 sailors were tested COVID-19 positive. There are, at present, hospitalized.
