NEW DELHI: The five-member Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, on Monday recommended the appointment of Justice Sanjay K Agrawal as the next chief justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
The recommendation comes amid a controversy surrounding the Rajasthan High Court, where Acting Chief Justice S P Sharma has recused himself from judicial work following allegations concerning his integrity levelled by Supreme Court judge Justice Sandeep Mehta.
The developments followed three letters written by Justice Mehta to CJI Kant within two weeks, urging the appointment of a regular chief justice for the Rajasthan High Court. The issue escalated after advocates at the high court reportedly raised slogans against Justice Sharma. He subsequently recused himself from judicial duties.
The Collegium’s recommendation on Monday evening names Justice Agrawal, currently serving at the Chhattisgarh High Court, as the proposed chief justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
The Collegium, which also comprises Justices Vikram Nath, B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh and P S Narasimha, recommended several other appointments.
Justice Alpesh Yeshwant Kogje of the Gujarat High Court has been recommended as the chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, while Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati of the Rajasthan High Court has been recommended as the chief justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
The Collegium also recommended the appointment of a new chief justice for the Chhattisgarh High Court as part of the latest round of judicial appointments.
