Retired Teacher Killed in Gurgaon Home After Dispute Over Rs 100
A 75-year-old retired Delhi government school teacher was allegedly strangled to death at her home in Gurgaon after a man reportedly entered the house intending to steal and later demanded Rs 100 from her.
The incident took place on Sunday night at the woman’s home in New Colony. Police identified the accused as 22-year-old Suraj Gupta, who was arrested the following day.
According to the investigation, Gupta allegedly entered the house after first spending several minutes outside observing the surroundings. A neighbour reportedly saw him arrive around 8:15pm and noticed him looking around before entering the property.
Shortly afterwards, the neighbour heard screams coming from inside the house. He alerted his father and other residents and contacted the police.
Several neighbours then went towards the house. As they approached, the suspect allegedly fled and hid among trees behind the property, where visibility was limited because of the darkness.
Inside the house, residents found the woman lying near the doorway of a room.
Police allege that Gupta had entered the property to steal. After encountering the woman, he allegedly demanded Rs 100. When she refused, he is accused of assaulting her, including striking her in the abdomen, before fleeing the scene.
A murder case was registered at New Colony police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Forensic, fingerprint and crime-scene teams examined the house and collected evidence.
The woman’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination. A medical board comprising two doctors later determined that strangulation was the cause of death. Investigators said there were no significant visible injuries apart from a mark around her neck.
The body was subsequently handed over to relatives, and the funeral was conducted on Monday.
Gupta was arrested near Laxmi Bazaar Park in Pratap Nagar on Monday. Police said he is originally from Devdha village in Bihar’s Samastipur district and had been living in Madanpuri, Gurgaon.
He reportedly worked at construction sites, where he was involved in making iron reinforcement structures used in buildings.
A quiet life ends in tragedy
The retired teacher had lived alone for several years in her family’s old home in Gurgaon. Her parents had died, and she had separated from her husband, who died in 2010. The couple had no children.
Her nephew, Sahil, who lives in Faridabad, said she had recently stayed with his family for several days because the Gurgaon house was in poor condition. She returned to the property only the previous week to complete bank-related formalities.
The family did not immediately know that she had died and learned of her death only later.
Neighbours described her as a quiet, humble and polite woman.
The case has left the neighbourhood shaken, with investigators now examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged break-in, the confrontation inside the house and the events that led to the woman’s death.
