A 60-year-old homemaker has been arrested for allegedly slitting the throat of her 80-year-old mother-in-law with a kitchen knife inside their apartment in Pune’s Ambegaon Budruk area on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, the incident took place around 2 pm in a flat located off the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass. Officials said only the two women were present in the house at the time of the attack.

Rahul Khilare said the woman’s husband, elder son, daughter-in-law and younger son were away when the incident occurred.

Police said the family, described as middle-class, lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Ambegaon Budruk. Investigators stated that the accused and her mother-in-law had reportedly been arguing over domestic matters for several years.

According to the police account, the two women argued again on Tuesday afternoon, after which the accused allegedly entered her mother-in-law’s bedroom carrying a kitchen knife. She is accused of first attacking the elderly woman on her chest and hands before later slitting her throat.

Police said the victim screamed for help during the assault, but no one nearby heard her cries.

The deceased woman’s son, a retired man, reportedly returned home later and found his mother lying motionless while his wife was allegedly still holding the knife. Shocked by the scene, he immediately went to a nearby police chowky to report the incident.

Officials said the accused herself also contacted the police control room and informed authorities about the killing.

Police teams reached the spot soon after, detained the woman and recovered the kitchen knife allegedly used in the crime. Authorities later obtained permission from a local court before formally arresting her later that night.
