Members of the British Kashmiri diaspora staged a protest in Bradford, United Kingdom, on Wednesday, expressing solidarity with residents of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) amid allegations of an intensified crackdown by Pakistani authorities.
The demonstration took place as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir holds its assembly elections, with protesters claiming that security operations in the region have escalated over the past two months. Participants gathered in Bradford city centre carrying banners and placards calling for the protection of fundamental rights, civil liberties and human dignity.
The rally, organised in support of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), sought to draw international attention to what organisers described as a deteriorating human rights situation in the region.
Speakers at the event alleged that recent security operations had resulted in civilian deaths, widespread fear and significant disruption to daily life. They claimed that women, children and elderly residents were among those affected.
Protesters called for independent and transparent investigations into allegations of excessive use of force, house raids and other reported human rights violations. They also urged Pakistani authorities to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law.
The demonstrators appealed to the international community, human rights organisations and the British government to closely monitor developments in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and support efforts to safeguard fundamental freedoms and promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions.
Organisers further alleged that several residents had been killed or injured during recent protests and claimed that the ongoing assembly elections had witnessed low voter turnout and electoral irregularities. They said many people in the region were demanding an end to Pakistan’s control over the territory and greater international engagement to protect the rights and safety of the local population.
India has also criticised Pakistan’s handling of the situation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the assembly elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as “a complete farce” and alleged that the region was witnessing violence, communication blackouts, intimidation and repression of civilians.
