Pune: A woman employee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and members of a census survey team were allegedly assaulted while conducting work related to National Census 2027 in Pune’s Minatai Thackeray Colony, police said.
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Swargate Police Station, where an FIR has been registered against five named accused and several unidentified individuals.
Dispute Began During Census Survey
According to the complaint, the woman employee, who has served with the PMC for 17 years and is currently assigned as a census enumerator, visited a residence in Lane No. 14 of Minatai Thackeray Colony on May 27 to collect census-related information.
Police said the residents allegedly refused to cooperate with the survey process, leading to an argument during which the complainant and another enumerator were allegedly verbally abused.
Team Attacked During Follow-Up Visit
Officials said a larger PMC team, including supervisors and enumerators, returned to the locality the following day to complete the survey and address the dispute.
According to the FIR, the situation escalated when members of the group were allegedly attacked with kicks, punches and stones while leaving the area.
Woman Employee Alleges Molestation and Theft
In her complaint, the woman employee alleged that one of the accused grabbed her hand and tore the sleeve of her blouse, an act that police are treating as an offence related to outraging a woman’s modesty.
She also reported that her mobile phone, wristwatch and gold chain went missing during the altercation.
Son Also Injured
The complainant’s son, who had accompanied the survey team for security reasons, was allegedly assaulted and sustained injuries during the incident.
Case Registered Under Multiple BNS Sections
Police have registered a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to:
- Obstruction of public servants in discharge of duty
- Assault and causing injuries
- Offences against a woman’s modesty
- Theft and related offences
The investigation is being conducted by Sujata Jadhav.
PMC Employees Demand Action
The incident has sparked strong reactions among PMC employees, who have called for strict action against those accused of attacking government officials engaged in census-related work.
Police said further investigation is underway to identify all those involved and establish the full sequence of events.
