US Border Patrol agents have arrested around 30 Indian nationals working as commercial truck drivers without legal immigration status as part of a targeted enforcement operation known as “Operation Checkmate.” The individuals are now expected to face deportation proceedings.
According to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the operation was conducted between May 11 and May 15 in Arizona’s Yuma Sector. A total of 52 people were taken into custody during the crackdown, with 36 of them found operating commercial semi-trucks while residing unlawfully in the United States.
Focus on Undocumented Commercial Drivers
Federal authorities said the initiative was designed to enhance public safety by enforcing immigration laws and identifying undocumented migrants working as commercial vehicle operators.
Of the 36 truck drivers arrested, at least 30 were Indian nationals. The remaining drivers were citizens of Mexico, El Salvador and Russia. Investigators found that some of those detained possessed commercial driver’s licences issued by states such as California, New York, Washington and Virginia, while others allegedly lacked valid driving credentials altogether.
Employment Permits No Longer Valid
Officials stated that many of the individuals had previously obtained employment authorisation documents during the Biden administration. However, those permits were reportedly no longer valid at the time of the operation.
All 52 detainees have been processed under federal immigration laws and are expected to be removed from the United States.
Authorities Cite Public Safety Concerns
US Border Patrol officials described the operation as part of a broader effort to ensure that commercial vehicles on American roads are operated by legally authorised and qualified drivers.
“Operation Checkmate reflects our commitment to safeguarding communities and roads from unlawfully present drivers who pose significant risks to public safety,” said Dustin Caudle, Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector.
Caudle added that federal agents remain engaged in daily enforcement efforts aimed at identifying undocumented commercial drivers and reducing the risk of serious road accidents.
Part of Wider Trump Administration Immigration Push
The arrests come amid the Trump administration’s intensified focus on immigration enforcement and border security.
Earlier, the US Department of Transportation issued directives intended to prevent unqualified foreign nationals from obtaining licences to operate commercial trucks and buses in the country. The move forms part of a wider effort to tighten oversight of the commercial transportation sector.
Scrutiny After Recent Fatal Accidents
The crackdown also follows a series of high-profile road accidents involving commercial vehicles driven by foreign nationals. In recent months, several Indian-origin truck drivers have been arrested and charged in connection with fatal crashes in different parts of the United States.
Federal authorities maintain that stricter enforcement of immigration and licensing regulations is necessary to improve road safety and ensure compliance with US laws. As deportation proceedings move forward, Operation Checkmate is expected to remain a key component of ongoing immigration enforcement efforts.
