An oil tanker carrying 23 Indian crew members caught fire off Russia’s southern coast on Tuesday following a reported drone attack, with all those on board safely rescued, according to Russian authorities.

The Liberian-flagged vessel was reportedly struck by what Russian officials described as naval drones while it was off the coast of Sochi. The impact triggered a major fire, with thick smoke visible from parts of the coastal city.

Russia’s transport ministry said the intensity of the blaze initially made it difficult for emergency teams to approach the vessel. No deaths or injuries among the crew have been reported, and all 23 Indian nationals on board were rescued.

Fire reported off Sochi

Videos and photographs circulated online showed flames rising from the vessel and a large plume of dark smoke over the sea. Local authorities reportedly restricted access to parts of the coastline and beaches as a precaution.

The incident occurred near Sochi, a major resort city on Russia’s Black Sea coast. Authorities have been assessing the situation and monitoring the area following the fire.

The exact circumstances of the reported strike have not been independently established. The incident comes amid continued attacks involving Russian and Ukrainian forces in and around the Black Sea.

Commercial shipping faces growing risks

Commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea have faced increasing security risks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Both Russia and Ukraine have carried out strikes against infrastructure linked to their opponent’s military and energy networks. Commercial shipping has also been affected, particularly vessels transporting agricultural and energy-related cargo.

Ukraine has previously described attacks on Russian oil infrastructure as part of its response to Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory. Moscow, meanwhile, has continued to carry out attacks against targets in Ukraine.

The latest incident involving the tanker is likely to add to concerns over the safety of commercial vessels operating in the region.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage to the tanker and investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported attack. Further details about the vessel’s cargo, its intended route and the extent of the damage have not yet been confirmed.
