KENDRAPADA: A government school headmaster in Odisha’s Jajpur district has been suspended after allegedly subjecting students to a shocking form of punishment—placing stinging nettle inside their trousers.
The incident occurred on April 17 at Sarubila Upper Primary School, where around 10 students of Classes IV and V were reportedly punished for creating a disturbance in class. The children later complained of severe itching and skin rashes.
Allegations and reaction
According to complaints from parents, headmaster Basudev Dehuri plucked stinging nettle from nearby bushes and used it to discipline the students. He was also accused of verbally abusing and physically assaulting some of them.
The incident sparked outrage in the local community. Parents and family members staged an indefinite protest outside the school on April 18, demanding strict action.
Action taken
Following the complaints, the education department initiated an inquiry. Block Education Officer Narayan Das said statements were recorded from students and teachers before action was taken.
Based on the findings, Dehuri was suspended on Tuesday.
The headmaster reportedly admitted to his actions and submitted a written apology, assuring that such behaviour would not be repeated. However, authorities proceeded with disciplinary action in view of the seriousness of the incident.
Wider concern
The episode has reignited concerns over corporal punishment in schools, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of child protection norms and safer learning environments.
