The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Madhya Pradesh government and the Shivpuri police over the alleged assault of a Class 4 Dalit student by a teacher at a government primary school in Ukawal village, Shivpuri district.
Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the NHRC said the incident, if found to be true, raises serious concerns about the violation of human rights. According to reports, the teacher allegedly assaulted the child and used casteist slurs after seeing him drinking water from his own bottle.
The Commission has sought a detailed report within two weeks from the state’s Chief Secretary and the Superintendent of Police, including information on the action taken and the statutory relief provided to the victim.
In a separate case, the NHRC has also issued a notice to the Haryana government over the death of a 12-year-old girl in Ambala district, allegedly caused by jaundice linked to contaminated drinking water. Several other children in the area have reportedly fallen ill after consuming the same water.
The Commission has directed Haryana’s Chief Secretary to submit a report within two weeks on the health condition of the affected children and the measures being taken to ensure safe drinking water and prevent further cases.
The NHRC said both incidents highlight serious concerns regarding the protection of human rights and the responsibility of authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens.
