In an unprecedented move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the NEET-UG 2026 retest, authorities have placed all individuals involved in preparing the examination paper under strict lockdown conditions until the conclusion of the re-examination on June 21.
The stringent security measures come in the wake of the paper leak controversy that led to the cancellation of the original NEET-UG examination held in May, affecting more than 22 lakh medical aspirants across the country.
Experts Moved to Secure Undisclosed Location
Officials overseeing the process said that paper setters, moderators, translators and other personnel involved in the confidential stages of question paper preparation have been relocated to a secure, undisclosed facility.
Under the isolation protocol, access to the outside world has been heavily restricted. Mobile phones, laptops, smartwatches and other communication devices have been prohibited, while internet access and external contacts have been tightly controlled.
Authorities are also monitoring entry and exit points, maintaining detailed records of all movements, and allowing access only to authorised personnel.
The lockdown arrangements will remain in place until the completion of the examination on June 21.
First Layer of a Multi-Tier Security System
Officials described the lockdown as only the first component of a comprehensive security framework developed jointly by the education ministry and the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The NEET-UG retest will be conducted in pen-and-paper mode from 2 pm to 5.15 pm on June 21 across 551 cities in India and 14 international centres.
To minimise the risk of leaks or unauthorised access, the entire examination process has been compartmentalised. Authorities have ensured that no single individual or group has complete access to every stage of operations.
Enhanced oversight is being applied to question paper development, translation, moderation, printing, packaging, storage, transportation and distribution.
Transportation Under Special Security Watch
The movement of examination materials has emerged as a major focus area following concerns raised during the earlier examination cycle.
Officials said the government has explored the possibility of using Indian Air Force aircraft for the secure transportation of question papers to various locations across the country.
The objective is to ensure that examination materials remain protected throughout the supply chain and reach centres without any risk of tampering.
Social Media Monitoring Intensified
Authorities have also expanded surveillance efforts in the digital space.
Teams are conducting round-the-clock monitoring of social media platforms, messaging applications and online forums to identify fake question papers, misinformation campaigns and suspicious activities that could compromise the examination process.
The monitoring exercise is aimed at quickly detecting and responding to any attempts to spread false information or exploit students through fraudulent claims.
Government Seeks to Restore Confidence
The sweeping security overhaul follows widespread criticism and public concern after allegations of a paper leak disrupted the original examination schedule.
Sources indicated that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has instructed officials to address every vulnerability identified during the earlier examination cycle and ensure that the retest is conducted with maximum transparency and security.
With millions of candidates awaiting the crucial examination, authorities hope the new safeguards will restore confidence in one of India’s most important entrance tests and ensure a fair assessment process for all aspirants.
