NEET-UG 2027 is likely to continue in the pen-and-paper format, with a full transition to computer-based testing (CBT) appearing unlikely before 2028, officials said.

The Centre has extended the tenure of the six-member examination reform task force, chaired by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, until January 27, 2027, to complete consultations and build consensus on reforms.

The panel, constituted on July 27, has received over 54,000 suggestions and held consultations with stakeholders. Its recommendations are expected to address examination security, transparency and the proposed shift to CBT.

Southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, have raised concerns over infrastructure gaps, rural students’ access to online exams, state representation in the National Testing Agency and disparities in school board marks.

With NEET-UG preparations beginning months ahead of its May examination, officials indicated that implementing major changes in 2027 would be difficult. The task force’s recommendations are therefore more likely to take effect from 2028.
