A 30-year-old man allegedly went on a stabbing rampage in Malwani on Friday morning, killing a 15-year-old boy and critically injuring another person before being overpowered by local residents. Police took the accused, Rizwaan Qureshi, into custody on murder charges after he was handed over by the crowd that restrained him.
According to police, Qureshi was on the verge of attacking a third person when locals intervened, subdued him, and beat him before alerting authorities.
The incident took place around 10:30 am near New Collector’s Compound in Malwani. Qureshi, who had arrived in Mumbai roughly ten days earlier and was staying in the area, reportedly approached a shop at Gate No. 6 asking for money. The shop, run by the family of 15-year-old Bunty Khan for their catering business, is attached to the building where the family also resides.
Police said Qureshi asked Khan for money and a glass of water. Khan agreed to bring water but refused to give him money after which Qureshi allegedly slashed the teen’s neck with a knife, causing severe bleeding.
He then reportedly moved further down the lane and attacked a passerby, Chetan Patel, in an unprovoked assault, also targeting his neck with the blade. Qureshi was allegedly approaching a third target when bystanders stepped in, restrained him, and handed him over to the Malwani police after beating him.
Both victims were taken to a government hospital, but Khan succumbed to his injuries. Patel is reported to be in stable condition after treatment.
Qureshi, originally from Uttar Pradesh, had previously lived in Malwani before relocating to Pune and then Hyderabad, working odd jobs including saree sales. Police are investigating the motive, suspecting he may have snapped after being refused money, and are also looking into whether he has any history of mental health issues. A murder case has been registered against him.
