Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced plans to add 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity over the next 10 to 11 years, highlighting renewable energy as key to India’s energy security and economic resilience.

Addressing the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi, Modi said India had achieved over 50% non-fossil installed power capacity ahead of its Paris climate commitment, with nearly 300 GW of capacity already in place.

He said investments in clean energy had helped India withstand global disruptions, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the West Asia crisis.

Modi also announced plans to invest around ₹2 lakh crore in strengthening transmission infrastructure and highlighted initiatives such as rooftop solar, solar irrigation and green hydrogen.

The summit, running until November 5, has participation from over 130 countries. India is targeting $220 billion in renewable energy investments by 2030.
