Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Namura Shipbuilding are to jointly develop a large-sized ammonia carrier, fuelled by ammonia.
With ammonia being eyed as future green fuel, including for shipping, the three companies aim to develop a large sized ammonia carrier.
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will take charge of the optimal design of cargo tank and deck tank used for ammonia fuel, organizing engine and related machinery systems including the fuel supply system, and development and design of cargo handling equipment, special equipment for ammonia transportation and safety equipment onboard.
MOL said it would establish a collaborative framework with each company to order the ship’s main engine, which is currently in development.
“Ammonia is considered to be a promising choice for realizing carbon neutrality in Japan as well, and its demand is expected to increase especially in applications involving replacement of existing fuels in thermal power plants and as a hydrogen carrier,” Mitsubishi said.
MOL said annual ammonia demand in Japan is estimated at 3m tons by the year 2030, and 30m tons by 2050.
