New Delhi: An Air India co-pilot was deported from the United States after allegedly being found with marijuana in his bag. The pilot had been travelling as on-duty staff (in the passenger cabin) on a Delhi–San Francisco flight on Tuesday, scheduled to operate the return leg.

According to sources, US authorities discovered the substance in his bag upon arrival in San Francisco. He was not permitted to leave the airport, and the airline was informed. It was then decided to send him back to India on the next available flight.

Air India notified the DGCA, and the co-pilot was en route to Delhi on Thursday.

An Air India spokesperson said, “One of our crew members travelling from Delhi to San Francisco on April 14 to position for a subsequent flight was found inadmissible under local laws and has been sent back to India. Air India maintains zero tolerance for any legal violations and upholds the highest standards of safety, compliance, and professional conduct. Strict disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with company policies. Safety remains our top priority.”

Sources added that the pilot had not consumed marijuana but was allegedly carrying it. While some countries permit its medicinal use, it remains illegal in India.
