BAREILLY: A 22-year-old man was left critically injured after three unidentified men allegedly tied him to a pole, poured petrol on him, and set him on fire in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district on Friday.
The victim, identified as Mohd Mehboob, was attacked while returning home from a mosque after offering Friday namaz, police said.
As the flames spread, the ropes binding him reportedly burned through, allowing him to break free. Mehboob managed to reach his home, where his family immediately rushed him to a nearby community health centre. He was later referred to another hospital in critical condition.
His father, Abdul Sattar, said Mehboob sustained around 50% burn injuries. The family has filed a complaint, though police have not yet registered an FIR.
Budaun SP (Rural) Hridesh Katheria said preliminary investigation suggests the attackers poured petrol on the victim before setting him ablaze.
“The victim mentioned having an argument with the accused a day earlier. Three suspects have been detained for questioning. All aspects of the case are being probed,” SP Katheria said.
