The Maharashtra Transport Department has decided to strengthen background checks and document verification for drivers working with app-based ride-hailing platforms, including Rapido, Ola and Uber, following an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) operation against a Rapido bike taxi driver in Mumbai’s Mahim area.
At a meeting, state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik directed department officials to conduct thorough checks of drivers’ backgrounds, driving licences and other mandatory documents. He also instructed officials to take strict legal action, including registering criminal cases wherever necessary, against those found violating the law.
The move follows an investigation involving an individual who was allegedly circulating objectionable content through social media accounts. The police investigation is ongoing. Preliminary findings reportedly did not establish direct links between the individual and any person or organisation in Pakistan.
Government Seeks Stricter Regulation of App-Based Transport
Sarnaik emphasised that enforcement should not be limited to action taken after an incident occurs. He called for regular monitoring of app-based passenger transport services to ensure that drivers and operators comply with applicable regulations.
The minister also directed officials to examine whether existing laws provide adequate powers to regulate these services. If necessary, the government may consider revising the legal framework to bring app-based transport operators and their drivers under more effective supervision by the State Transport Authority.
The department has also been asked to improve coordination among relevant authorities, address complaints seriously and take appropriate action against individuals found guilty of violations.
Earlier Controversy Over Marathi Language Requirement
Sarnaik had previously warned of strict action against commercial passenger vehicle drivers who failed to learn Marathi, triggering a controversy in the state.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis subsequently granted auto-rickshaw and cab drivers a one-year extension to learn the language.
The latest directive signals a renewed focus on regulatory compliance and driver verification across app-based passenger transport services in Maharashtra.
