The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second-largest school district in the US, will block students from accessing generative AI tools on district-issued devices during the 2026–27 school year.
The move comes amid growing concerns that students may become overly dependent on AI for assignments, potentially affecting their writing, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Unlike New York City’s planned restrictions, which focus on students through eighth grade, LAUSD’s policy applies to students across the district.
However, the district is not abandoning AI completely. LAUSD is developing an AI literacy curriculum to teach students how the technology works, identify inaccurate AI-generated information and use these tools responsibly. Teachers will also be permitted to use AI for certain educational purposes.
The policy reflects a growing effort by US schools to balance the risks of AI dependence with the need to prepare students for an increasingly AI-driven world.
