Chaos broke out near Basireddypalli village in SR Puram mandal of Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district after a liquor-laden pickup truck overturned, prompting locals to rush to the spot and take away bottles and cartons from the vehicle.
According to SR Puram police, the truck was transporting a consignment of liquor from Chittoor to Karvetinagaram on Saturday. As the vehicle was passing through Basireddypalli, one of its tyres suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control. The pickup truck subsequently overturned.
The impact sent several cartons of liquor tumbling onto the road. As word spread, villagers gathered at the accident site and began taking away liquor bottles and cartons, resulting in a chaotic scramble.
By the time police reached the spot after being alerted, nearly half of the consignment had reportedly been taken away. Police estimated the value of the missing liquor at around Rs 10 lakh.
The injured driver was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
SR Puram police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Efforts are underway to identify those who allegedly took away the liquor consignment.
