AGARTALA: A major landslide in South Assam has disrupted train connectivity to Tripura, prompting the state government to hold an emergency review on Tuesday morning to assess the availability of essential commodities, particularly fuel.
The landslide occurred on Monday evening between New Haflong and Jatinga Lampur stations, damaging railway tracks after boulders and earth collapsed onto the line. The incident is believed to have been triggered by nearby road repair work carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
A senior Tripura government official confirmed that authorities were in close coordination with the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) to monitor the situation. “We received the alert last night and immediately contacted the Area Manager of Badarpur NFR. Restoration efforts are underway on a war footing,” the official said.
He added that a high-level meeting would be held later in the day to ensure there is no disruption in the supply chain, with a particular focus on maintaining fuel availability across the state.
Train Cancellations Announced
In the wake of the continued landslide activity, the NFR has cancelled several key services. The Agartala–Bengaluru Express was called off due to debris—boulders and mud—continuing to fall near Jatinga Lampur overnight.
Additionally, the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express, which originates from Sabroom in South Tripura, has been cancelled between Sabroom and Lumding. Three other trains originating from Agartala were also cancelled soon after the initial disruption.
Restoration work is ongoing, but railway officials have not yet confirmed when full services will resume. The Tripura government has assured citizens that steps are being taken to manage supply chains and avoid shortages during the disruption.
