Kongsberg Vanguard LP has secured a federal contract to design the Canadian Coast Guard’s Mid-Shore Multi-Mission vessels, launching a programme central to Ottawa’s fleet renewal plans, according to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

The contract, awarded in mid-March to a consortium of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Salt Ship Design and Adaptive Marine Solutions Inc, establishes the basis for a contract design covering vessels intended for marine science, hydrographic surveys, search and rescue and icebreaking operations.

The design phase forms part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy and is expected to deliver a specification suitable for shipyard tendering, aligning with federal procurement requirements and domestic production priorities.

“KONGSBERG in Canada is proud to contribute to the growth of Canada’s industrial base by investing locally, strengthening allied supply chains, and helping create export opportunities for Canadian businesses,” the company said.

Adaptive Marine Solutions stated the work “sustains skilled jobs, builds domestic expertise, and reinforces a resilient shipbuilding ecosystem,” while Salt Ship Design said it intends “to deliver a harmonized contract design suitable for quoting by the bidding shipyards.”

The partners said the programme combines Norwegian technology with Canadian engineering capacity and is structured in line with the Build-Partner-Buy framework.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace is a business area of Kongsberg Gruppen, engaged in the development and delivery of defence systems, aerospace technologies and advanced maritime solutions for governmental and commercial applications.
