A 38-year-old woman was seriously injured after she was allegedly dragged out of a car and repeatedly assaulted with a brick by her boyfriend following an argument in Kanpur, police said.
The incident took place on Saturday evening while the two were reportedly travelling to Brahmavart Ghat in Bithoor.
According to police, the woman locked herself inside the car in an attempt to protect herself during the argument. The accused allegedly struck the vehicle several times with a brick before forcing the door open, dragging her onto the road and repeatedly hitting her on the head and other parts of her body with the brick.
Hearing her cries for help, passers-by intervened, overpowered the accused and assaulted him before informing the police.
The woman sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a private medical college for treatment.
Police identified the accused as Devashish Nigam (38), a resident of Swaroop Nagar. Investigators said he had picked up the woman, who works at IIT Kanpur, from the institute’s main gate before the two set out for Bithoor.
According to police, an argument broke out during the journey, prompting Devashish to stop the car on a service lane near Mandhana. He then allegedly picked up a brick lying by the roadside and attacked the woman.
When police arrived at the scene, the accused allegedly threatened the officers and claimed, “My mother is a retired IAS officer.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said a case was being registered based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family.
“Investigation is underway and all aspects are being examined,” the officer said.
