A 27-year-old man allegedly killed his girlfriend and her mother before attempting suicide in Virar near Mumbai, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Shivam Upadhyay from Nalasopara, is currently undergoing treatment after allegedly slashing his own throat following the attack. An FIR has been registered against him for double murder.

According to police, Upadhyay had visited the residence of his girlfriend, Nancy Mishra (24), on Tuesday to discuss marriage with her mother, Sarita Mishra (48). However, Sarita reportedly opposed the proposal, leading to an argument. Sources indicated that Nancy herself was also not in favour of the marriage.

On Wednesday, Upadhyay allegedly returned to the house, locked the flat from inside, and attacked both women with a kitchen knife. The victims sustained multiple stab injuries to the neck, abdomen, and back, and died on the spot.

After the attack, the accused allegedly attempted suicide by slashing his throat with a blade and collapsed inside the house. The disturbance alerted neighbours, who informed the police.

Authorities have begun an investigation into the incident, while the accused remains under medical supervision.
