Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has indicated a more assertive approach toward the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, warning that Tehran will take its control of the waterway to a “new stage,” even as a fragile ceasefire with the US and Israel remains under strain.

In a written address on Thursday, Khamenei said Iran would not allow the US and Israel to go “unpunished” for what he described as aggression, and vowed to seek compensation for wartime losses.

“By the permission of Almighty God, we will not let the criminal aggressors go free. We will demand compensation for every injury inflicted, blood money for the martyrs, and reparations for disabled veterans. We will also advance the management of the Strait of Hormuz to a new stage,” he said.

Victory claim amid tensions

Khamenei also declared that Iran had emerged victorious in the ongoing West Asia conflict, praising the resilience of its people and armed forces.

“It can be boldly said that the heroic nation of Iran has been the definitive victor in this arena,” he stated.

Despite the ceasefire, he called on citizens to remain mobilised, urging the formation of “human defence chains” to maintain pressure during negotiations. “Your voices in public squares influence the outcome of these talks,” he added.

At the same time, Khamenei struck a measured note, saying Iran does not seek war but will not compromise on its “legitimate rights,” even while engaging in dialogue with Washington.

Strait of Hormuz at centre of tensions

The Strait of Hormuz continues to be a major flashpoint. As one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, any disruption in the narrow passage raises concerns over global supply shocks and rising energy prices.

US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of failing to honour commitments to ensure safe oil transit through the strait, warning of consequences if shipments are hindered.

Meanwhile, the ceasefire remains precarious. The US and Israel maintain that the truce does not extend to Hezbollah-linked targets, with Israeli strikes in Lebanon ongoing.

Both sides continue to accuse each other of violations, keeping the risk of escalation high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.
