NEW DELHI: India will continue to engage with the United States on immigration and visa-related issues affecting Indian travellers and students, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) said on Friday, while reiterating that visa and immigration policies are sovereign decisions of individual countries.
“When issues concerning genuine travellers seeking to visit the US are brought to our attention, we take them up with the US side to minimise difficulties for our people,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
He was responding to questions on the US government’s decision to tighten visa rules for foreign students, exchange visitors and journalists.
Under the new regulations announced by the US Department of Homeland Security on Thursday, non-immigrant visa holders in the F, J and I categories will be admitted for a fixed period. The F category covers students, the J category applies to exchange visitors, and the I category is meant for journalists.
