India and Singapore have agreed to strengthen cooperation in telecommunications and food safety while exploring partnerships in nuclear technology, semiconductors, space and cybersecurity.
The agreements were reached during the fourth meeting of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR), hosted by Singapore. The meeting focused on expanding cooperation in advanced manufacturing, digitalisation, skill development, healthcare, connectivity and sustainability.
A memorandum of understanding was exchanged between the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the Singapore Food Agency to promote cooperation in food safety. A letter of intent was also signed between the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and Singapore’s Infocom Media Development Authority to strengthen cooperation in telecommunications and broadcasting. The two countries also agreed to cooperate on maritime heritage.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described the discussions as “very productive”, highlighting opportunities in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, digital technology, fintech, skilling, green economy and clean energy.
Nuclear technology emerged as another area of potential cooperation. Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said both sides discussed small modular reactors (SMRs) and the possibility of sharing knowledge and experience in the technology. Singapore has not yet decided whether to adopt nuclear energy but wants to keep pace with developments in the sector.
Semiconductors are also expected to become an important area of partnership. Singaporean companies already investing in India are considering bringing their suppliers to the country to build a stronger semiconductor ecosystem. Singapore also expressed interest in helping train Indian workers through specialised semiconductor and advanced manufacturing centres.
The two countries are exploring cooperation in space technology as well. Gan said Singapore is interested in working with India in research, development and commercial space activities. Singapore’s space agency is expected to engage with India’s IN-SPACe to identify potential areas of collaboration.
Cybersecurity was another key area discussed, with both sides exploring cooperation to strengthen digital infrastructure and security.
The countries also discussed improving air connectivity through the bilateral air services agreement, with officials noting that growing trade and investment could increase travel between India and Singapore.
The ISMR meeting was followed by discussions with business leaders through the India-Singapore Business Roundtable, where participants focused on improving ease of doing business, increasing capital market flows and expanding cooperation in artificial intelligence.
The ISMR was established in 2022 as a special mechanism to deepen cooperation between India and Singapore in areas including technology, investment and advanced manufacturing. The meeting is held annually, alternating between the two countries.
