NAGPUR: As bullets whizzed by just meters away and the desperate cries of victims echoed in the air, the Roopchandani family from Nagpur counts themselves fortunate to have made it out of Baisaran Valley alive. The dramatic escape saw Simran, injured and struggling, being lifted through the rocky and slippery forest slopes by her husband, Tilak, and son, Garv. Driven by sheer survival instinct, the family pushed forward until they reached safety.
Tilak recounted the harrowing ordeal, explaining that his wife fell twice while navigating the difficult terrain, fracturing one of her legs. “When the firing started, we ran into the forest with many others. We didn’t dare look back, but could hear the gunfire. At least 100 rounds were fired. We knew we had no time to stop,” Tilak said, adding that both he and Garv managed to remain unharmed.
“It must have been an 8km trek through perilous terrain, with Simran relying on our shoulders for support. We eventually reached a safe spot and rushed her to a private hospital,” he continued.
Tilak described their escape as a brush with death, acknowledging that the emotional scars from the trauma would take months to heal. The Roopchandani family is now preparing to return home after the terrifying ordeal.
