Heavy rainfall triggered a fresh landslide in Rimbi village under the Yuksom-Tashiding constituency of West Sikkim on Friday, sending large amounts of mud, rocks and debris downhill.
The incident occurred amid continued rainfall in the region, raising concerns among residents as nearby homes, properties and road connectivity remain vulnerable. No casualties have been reported so far, news agency ANI reported.
Multiple landslides reported across Sikkim
The incident in Rimbi was among several rain-related landslides reported across Sikkim following heavy overnight rainfall.
A landslide struck Tadong in Gangtok late Thursday night after intense rainfall. Videos from the area showed rocks, mud and debris cascading down the hillside.
Last week, another landslide in Lingding, Tadong, partially damaged a house after mud and rainwater entered rooms on the first floor. Three water pipelines were also damaged, disrupting water supply in the area.
The road near Lingding Jhora remained blocked for several hours, from around 3am to 9am, before authorities cleared the debris and restored traffic movement. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Residents shifted to safer locations
Following fresh landslide activity and continued heavy rainfall, 128 people from 28 vulnerable households in Rimbi, Gyalshing district, were moved to safer locations, according to the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority.
Relief and restoration operations were undertaken in Rimbi and Singlitam, with local authorities providing assistance to affected residents and clearing accumulated debris.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and avoid areas experiencing active landslide activity as rainfall continues across the state.
