A Haryana government accounts officer allegedly died by suicide after being summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with a ₹593 crore bank fraud case involving state funds.
The deceased, identified as Balwant Singh, was posted with the Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited. Police said he is suspected to have jumped from the eighth floor of the Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred just hours after the Haryana government dismissed HPGCL’s chief financial officer, Amit Dewan, over alleged involvement in the same fraud case. Singh had reportedly been scheduled to appear before the CBI later that day.
According to police, Singh, who worked at the Sector 6 office in Panchkula, arrived at the Secretariat in the morning and obtained a visitor pass around 10:30 am to meet officials in the Controller of Accounts office. His movements in the building are now being examined. He was found dead around 3:30 pm.
The body has been shifted to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 for a postmortem examination. Authorities are continuing their investigation into both the death and the fraud case.
