A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) school in Sanjay Nagar, Govandi, Mumbai, has come under scrutiny after it was allegedly found being used to tether goats, prompting corporators to demand an inquiry into how livestock was allowed on the school premises.
The issue was raised during the civic education committee meeting on Thursday by nominated corporator Nikhil Vyas through a point of objection.
Questioning the alleged misuse of the school premises, Vyas asked how a facility meant for students could be used to keep animals.
“Is this school meant for education or animal husbandry? Are we now going to introduce animal husbandry in the curriculum?” he asked.
Vyas also raised concerns about possible local pressure on the school administration and questioned whether the school watchman had acted in collusion with local groups. He demanded an inquiry to determine who was behind the alleged pressure and how the goats were allowed inside the premises.
Several committee members supported the demand for action.
Corporator Swapna Mhatre called for immediate intervention by civic officials and said officials found responsible for failing to act against the alleged encroachment should also be held accountable.
Another corporator, Sushma Samant, said civic officials should not give in to local pressure or intimidation and called for strict action against those responsible.
Corporator Yogita Koli described the incident as shocking and noted that the alleged misuse of the school premises had come to light only after the matter was brought before the committee.
Education Committee chairperson Rajeshree Shirwadkar also expressed displeasure over the incident and directed the civic administration to submit a detailed report at the next committee meeting.
The committee decided to keep the matter pending until the administration submits its report.
