Gemalink Port, in Cai Mep, Vietnam, has held a ceremony to mark handling 1m teu in its first year of operation.

Gemalink International Port is a joint venture between Gemadept Vietnam Group and French partner CMA Terminals and the first phase went into operation in 2021.

Do Cong Khanh, Deputy General Director of Gemadept, said that this is an important event not only for Gemalink Port but also a memorable milestone when for the first time in the history of Vietnam’s port industry, a port achieved throughput of 1 teu after only one year of operations, reported Vietnamese media.

Despite challenges from the pandemic, broken supply chain, blank sailings and frequent delays, Gemalink Port that began operations in January 2021, has maintained the smooth flow of cargo, relieving congestion at Cai Mep – Thi Vai seaport area, bringing Vietnamese goods directly to the Americas, Europe and the whole intra-Asia region, Khanh added.

Since the beginning of 2022, Gemalink has moved 305,000 teu, increasing cumulatively more than 1m teu to date,

Gemalink Port has 1.5m teu annual capacity in phase one and will increase to nearly 3m teu in phase two. The main berth is 1,150 metres long with a draught of 16 metres and eight STS, allowing vessels up to 200,000 dwt. Total area is 72 hectares.
