Bernhard Schulte recently registered its first Liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) carrier under the Portuguese flag.
The vessel is equipped with an LNG dual-fuel propulsion system. Combined with other proven technologies, in particular a wind-assisted rotor sail and an air lubrication system, this results in significantly lower CO₂ emissions.
LCO₂ carriers play an important role in the global carbon capture and storage (CCS) logistics chain by transporting captured CO₂ from industrial sources to storage or utilization sites. Demand for this vessel type is expected to increase as CCS infrastructure expands in Europe and other regions.
The registration marks another step in the Madeira Registry’s engagement with next-generation vessel types, adding LCO₂ carriers to the range of innovative tonnage operating under the Portuguese flag.
